![]() ![]() The study recommended that further studies be done on other media text like radio, television, magazine and online news. The result also shows that text has lexical items that are effective in terms of cohesion. Findings show that the text show a relatively high number of cohesive devices consist mainly of nouns and prepositions followed by verbs and the least used is adjectives which indicate that text is highly informative. To achieve the desired goal, intensive and extensive study of the purposively selected news reports in The Punch, Leadership and Vanguard was conducted. The corpus of the study is six purposively selected news articles from three Nigerian newspapers. To gather data for the study, the researcher used descriptive corpus research design using Halliday and Hasan (1976) analytical framework. In order to achieve the objectives of the study, a review of related literature was carried out. This study therefore identified cohesive devices and their effectiveness in news items on Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in selected Nigerian newspapers. Cohesion is one of language mechanisms which contribute to readers understanding of texts by making them more coherent through various cohesive devices. Many studies were made about the media language of Ebola Virus Language but little attention was given to cohesion in such reports. One of the most widely reported diseases in recent years is the Ebola Virus Disease which was initially localised in the Democratic Republic of Congo but rapidly spread to many west and central African countries including Nigeria and thereby becoming a public health scare. One of the aspects the media cover is health related information such as issues relating to diseases and epidemics. As such, many people expose themselves to media texts so as to get the relevant information. The mass media whether print or broadcast through its primary responsibility of educating, informing and entertaining plays a significant role in many aspects of human life. Keywords: political speech, rhetoric, persuasion, cohesion, intertextuality. This tool has proved to be very effective to show the resonance of content and form among the three speeches analyzed. We then suggest a new dimension for the analysis of cohesion: what we have termed intertextual cohesion, a device to extend the scope of cohesion beyond the limits of the text. The results reveal that, although they share similarities, the texts also showed differences in the cohesive devices employed. We first carry out an analysis of cohesion in these three masterpieces of political writing, applying our own model based on the combination and adaptation of those found in Halliday & Hasan’s (1976) and Beaugrande & Dressler’s (1981), in order to cover a wider range of devices and, at the same time, ameliorate some flaws ascribed by critics to Halliday & Hasan’s (1976). The present study attempts to add to the existing body of literature on political rhetoric by analyzing in detail the cohesive devices used in three political texts - The Gettysburg Address, I have a dream and Obama’s Inaugural Address – and their potential persuasive function. This would be possible with the use of repetition devices. The results also showed that the said writers organised texts on a syntactic level only, which implied that they should organise texts on a semantic level also. On the basis of these findings, the study concluded that Pakistani research article writers organised information in abstracts using reference items the most frequently and they were mainly concerned with directive as well as referential functions of meaning. ![]() The results revealed that Pakistani research writers used reference items the most frequently to achieve "directive" as well as "referential" functions. For this purpose, 50 abstracts were retrieved from two famous Pakistani research journals (25 articles per journal), which were developed into a corpus for the study and analysed through AntConc. In addition, the study aims to know what functions the said writers achieve through the most frequently used cohesive items. This study aims to investigate the use of cohesive items in the abstracts of Pakistani research articles and thereby determine what type of cohesive items are frequently used by writers. The use of coherence and cohesion helps create communicative potential and structural correctness in texts. ![]() Writing requires a suitable and strategic use of language with communicative potential and structural correctness. ![]()
